Design Challenge
Design a print publication to help the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum promote a collection of your choice. Assess the message and do research to inform your design direction. Use Adobe InDesign to create dynamic type, image and message in a visually engaging way. Use design principles with type (use paragraph and character styles), image, and a modular grid to arrange all elements. Design multiple iterations and refine. Think about the end-user experience to inform all design choices.

Solution
“Give Me A Sign: The Language of Symbols” exhibition publication combines engaging typography, imagery, and messaging to communicate the history and significance of symbols, with a particular focus on Henry Dreyfuss’s “Symbol Sourcebook.” The publication uses a modular grid to structure content, integrating dynamic type and carefully curated visuals to guide the reader through the collection. The design prioritizes clarity and accessibility, ensuring that each page is cohesive while maintaining a modern and professional aesthetic. Large, impactful images and a clear typographic hierarchy highlight key collection items, creating an informative and visually engaging experience. The combination of print and digital formats ensures wide accessibility while maintaining the polished, museum-quality look that reflects the institution’s standards.
